Methodology for starting up on Xiaohongshu

I published my first post on 16th Feb just over 2 months ago and have acquired 1 team member, 104 followers and over 10 sign ups for SkilledUp Life.

The Rules

As I cannot read Chinese, I breached their rules in the early days. Make sure you do not include website addresses in your posts or comments. Xiaohongshu will penalise you. As a result, they took away my ability to comment.

The beginning

  • Post regularly – which I didn’t do. This was my mistake. Suggest post daily.
  • Follow those you think might be interested in what you offer – don’t follow cyclists unless you want your feed to be flooded with posts about your hobby.
  • Connect with all who like your posts or comments.
  • Keep the following to follower ratio below 4:1. Mine was 3.89:1 leading up to 100 follower mark.

Conversion process

  • Once connected, use direct messaging to convert.
  • Reuse standard messages.
  • First message: Introduce yourself.
  • Second message: Ask them to sign up, build their profile (in our case) and inform the username.
  • Third message: Once checked, ask them to connect with you on WeChat.
  • Once connected on WeChat, add them to your group to build your mini community on WeChat.

We have 19 on WeChat that include 2 current teammates, 2 past teammates and 15 we acquired.

Then support them through Tawk on Website and SkilledUp Life Direct Messaging to encourage them to complete their profiles.

Once you go over 100 followers

  • Start only to follow back those who follow you.
  • Don’t just follow everyone who likes your posts and comments.
  • Start taking down posts that have less than 100 views. Perhaps repost them with improvements.
  • Reduce following:follower ratio to 3:1
  • Get rid of posts that got you into trouble. Repost them without web links. I am keeping the one with nearly 11,000 views even though it is hidden for others.

Set a target

Right now I have 105 followers and it’s time to set the first set of targets to be achieved by end of April 2024:

  • Daily followers: 5
  • Daily volunteer sign ups: 1 (20% success)

I didn’t want to go overboard and set up a target I could not achieve.
