The Richard Report and Digital Economy

The Richard Report prepared on behalf of the Shadow Cabinet by Doug Richard of Dragon’s Den fame and Chairman of Library House and Trutap, both of which are in financial trouble at present, addressed some key issues regarding small businesses and the Government with respect to business support.  As Doug put it, the big numbers are worth the attention, especially the number of business support schemes, and the amount of money the government spent on business support services and the resulting 33.5% overhead it attracts in distribution. The report contained more revealing figures within the main body of text, e.g.…

House Prices drop by 2.9% in November 2008

Are we heading for negative equity? I believe we have already reached this point, especially if home owners have remortgaged their houses in good times, we all enjoyed during the last decade or so. The house price index published today by Rightmove indicates a sharp decline of 2.9% this month as home owners rush to cash in before further melt down in the housing market. This has increased the annual year-on-year change to negative 7.1% from negative 4.9% reported last month. The full report can be accessed below: Tags: House prices, rightmove, rightmove house price index

e-mail marketing – edocr at the centre causing havoc

Today, I received a request to remove a person from one of my e-mails. And he made the point that my e-mail did not have an option to remove him from my mailing list. The problem is that I use multiple channels with multiple mailing lists. What does that mean? At present, my day is spent on managing a complex web of activities. These activities fall broadly into brands, some of which have not yet been publicised. EIPPWorld.com, ForesightNorth and Northern StartUp 2.0 are divisions of eveo Ltd. Product development to sales and marketing. Building an ecosystem for digital businesses…

Courtesy of BBC – Financial Crisis 2008 in Graphics

These graphics from BBC on the financial crisis that affects all of us one way or another, are too good to be ignored. Casualties – Number of companies that were nationalised, taken over, asset stripped or let to go bankrupt. The Cost of the bail-out – Unbelievable to think the cost of Northern Rock nationalisation. AIG’s bail out look almost minor news. edocr also hosts number of documents related to the credit crunch, all of which can be accessed from here. Knowledge Management Job Trends

I just discovered SimplyHired that tracks employment trends based on US data, which shows remarkable come back on jobs related to knowledge management. However, it reports typical salaries of $58,000 and further analysis is required to understand how it is calculated. On SimplyHired’s defence, they clearly states that average knowledge management salaries can vary greatly due to company, location, industry, experience and benefits. This salary was calculated using the average salary for all jobs with the term "knowledge management" anywhere in the job listing. Above method raises serious questions about the validity of the calculation. But in the absence of…

Knowledge Management – what’s happening?

Here are some quotes I lifted off an old IBM slide pack published by Jennifer Okimoto and uploaded to Slideshare.net by Elusa (Luis Suarez) on Knowledge Management (KM): You can’t manage knowledge – nobody can. What you can do is to manage the environment in which knowledge can be created, discovered, captured, shared, distilled, validated, transferred, adopted, adapted and applied.” Chris Collison and Geoff Parcell, Learning to Fly: Practical Knowledge Management from Leading and Learning Organizations “…if you ask someone, or a body for specific knowledge in the context of a real need it will never be refused. If you…

Northern Stars welcomed Tom Watson, Minister for the Cabinet Office

On 24th September 2008, Northern StartUp 2.0 community welcomed Tom Watson, Minister for Cabinet Office and his private secretary Sarah Gouldbourne to Manchester.  This was the first time we welcomed a Government Minister. Since my first meeting with Tom, I have changed my viewpoints about Government Ministers. I always had the thought that Government Ministers are untouchable and quite full of themselves. Tom is quite the opposite. A down to earth individual. In fact he is an exceptional individual.  Tom has been in Manchester for number of days with his young family, the latest addition been only five months old.…

Attack on this blog revealed

Over the last two months or so, some of you reported that my blog could not be accessed due to blacklisting by Google. Most of you read my blog through Fire Fox 3 browser. When this first happened, even I was unable to access my blog, so my trusty hosting provider, Chris Haslam of Ixis IT dully updated the wordpress to the latest version and removed some offending code. I updated the password and so for a time, the problem disappeared. Whilst I was on holiday, the blog seems to have had another attack and Google and FF3 continue to…

2008 Summer Break – Ranaweera Family in Sri Lanka

I do not normally speak about personal life here, but as I already published the holiday video in YouTube, I must as well publish it here. So here goes, I had a great three weeks in Sri Lanka whilst my family was there for five weeks. Met lot of relatives and few friends. My brother and sister also came from New York and London respectively, so it was a long awaited reunion. We visited Colombo (I am 16 miles from Colombo), Kandy (wife’s from there), Anuradapura (Sri Lanka had a highly developed civilisation thousands of years ago when Western world…

Sun StartUp Essentials & Stewart Townsend

Many of you know that I am a keen advocate of Sun Microsystems’ Sun StartUp Essentials Programme. I am fortunate to work with Stewart Townsend (a brilliant easy-to-get-alone individual) from the beginning of the programme, and continue to do so with sharing ideas and initiatives. Stewart has geared the initiative to become a true friend to digital startups in the UK. He has filled the gap that other competitors (HP, Microsoft, etc) have not seen. Initiatives he supports or supported include Northern StartUp 2.0, Mashup Events, Webmission08 and Digital Mission. No company is too small for Sun. Stewart engages with…
