Wisdom Bites #1 – Do the right thing

It’s easy to say, “Do the right thing” but what does that mean? When and how do you apply it? Is this the same as listening to your gut feeling? Do you listen to your mind or your heart when deciding?

In my opinion, to do the right thing you need to take both the mind and the heart into consideration, which is not easy if they are not in alignment. Let’s explore an example:

  • You made a mistake. Should you own up or pretend you are not responsible for it? The right thing is to accept the mistake, which may hurt your pride. Where commercials are involved, accepting your mistake may result in having to pay penalties, which would make the decision process harder.

“Do the right thing” is a phrase that generally means:

Act with integrity, honesty, and fairness—even when it’s difficult or when no one is watching.

In more detail, it can mean:

  • Following your moral compass – choosing what’s ethical over what’s easy or self-serving.
  • Making tough decisions – even if they’re unpopular or personally costly.
  • Treating others with respect and kindness, even when it’s not required.
  • Being accountable – owning up to mistakes and correcting them.

In different contexts:

  • In life: It might mean helping someone in need or standing up against injustice.
  • In business: It can mean putting customers or employees first, refusing shady deals, or being transparent.
  • In leadership: Setting an example by choosing what’s right over what’s convenient.

It’s a simple phrase, but often the hardest to live by—because the “right thing” isn’t always black and white.
