Wisdom Bites #2 – Be Yourself

Perhaps a better phrase would be authentic. I think there are subtle differences between being yourself and being authentic. There’s also another term be genuine. We can pretend to be someone else in some cases, but in my opinion, this could lead to heaps of problems. No one is perfect. Painting a picture of perfection could lead to disasters, especially when you have to be right all times. It’s much easier to be you and yourself and access the roughness that comes with it. If you pretend and if you are not genuine, people will eventually find out. When they…

Wisdom Bites #1 – Do the right thing

It’s easy to say, “Do the right thing” but what does that mean? When and how do you apply it? Is this the same as listening to your gut feeling? Do you listen to your mind or your heart when deciding? In my opinion, to do the right thing you need to take both the mind and the heart into consideration, which is not easy if they are not in alignment. Let’s explore an example: You made a mistake. Should you own up or pretend you are not responsible for it? The right thing is to accept the mistake, which…

Career transition without spend

Don’t give up your paid working hours to join SkilledUp Life team I just interviewed a Brit for a leadership role at https://skilledup.life – to my surprise, she was looking to compromise paid hours to join us as a Volunteer. No one needs to do this. SkilledUp Life Volunteer Term is designed to be an add on to daily life. It should not be a replacement. Think of us as – instead of watching TV and relaxing in the evening, spend 13 weeks with us. You can gain amazing experience and skills in a truly international remote team. This might…

Attrition rate drops to 58.93%

The attrition rate at the SkilledUp Life team has reduced to 58.93% which is good. However, this is artificially improved due to the very low recruitment velocity experienced at present. So we should not congratulate ourselves. It’s my belief this could be reduced to 40%. This should be the key focus of the Deputy Head of HR we are currently recruiting.

Delivering Tech Entrepreneur perspective to AccelerateMe Cohort in Manchester

Enjoyed delivering a session on tech entrepreneurship to Accelerate ME cohort today.Had a chat with Techcelerate Tech Founder member and SkilledUp Life tech startup customer Robertas Kareckas.Good to meet Ian Whilby, John Whalley and Layl Bteich. Thanks Jasper Lee for inviting me.Slides are accessible from:– Jaunt https://lnkd.in/gaw4CMk7– edocr.com https://lnkd.in/gi-dVznmWhilst I continue to fail to win Raymond Zheng, it was good to get an update on his tech startup as well as his career.

Network effect

Chris Yeh of Blitzscaling recently wrote about the network effect https://www.blitzscalingvc.com/post/blitzscaling-network-effects Below is my response to his recent post on Linkedin. Chris Yeh I feel you have explained this much better than NFX has in the past. At https://skilleup.life I can’t wait to go live with Version 2 to fully leverage the network effect. In my experience with 56,000 volunteers, network effect needs to be constantly reviewed.Let me explain. When I started, I thought we would get more from the U.K. my home country. I didn’t know a single Nigerian. Today 42% are identified as from Nigeria. And this number would…

Wasting time on wrong customers or sour grapes – you decide!

Don’t waste time focusing on the wrong type of customers. Some customers will love your product. Some might hate it. And there will be plenty of others between love and hate. I’ve learned over the years that you cannot make every customer love your product. It’s better to let those who hate your product go and focus on those who love it. I just heard from a past customer that for him, SkilledUp Life was a waste of time. He had particularly strong views that would not be tolerated in the modern workplace. On the opposite end, we have customers…

Pricing dilemma

We have so many tech startup customers who ought to be paying us the Advanced Plan pricing, yet continue to stay on the Starter Plan. I even heard from one customer that their revenues tripled recently. In one case, other than the founder, 100% of the team members are SkilledUp Lifers. Yet they will continue not to upgrade to reflect their growth. With immediate effect (after giving sufficient notice), we increased pricing. We have also introduced limits which we did not want to impose before. Sadly, as companies do not upgrade to suit their usage and revenue growth, we had…
